Generators or wind
chargers can be used to supplement PV systems, this kind of system is known as a
"hybrid system". Generators/wind chargers can be used in the winter
months to keep the system charged when there is a lack of sunlight or in the
summer months when there is an unexpected prolonged period of little
sunlight.
Generators can also be
used directly when using large tools, which may be more economic than upgrading
the PV system. It is more cost effective to employ a backup source of
electricity during the winter months of the year. It is also recommended to
charge the batteries by using a battery charger whilst you are running a
generator for the use of your larger equipment. This will make sure your
batteries are charged as well as ensure the maximum performance of your
generator, as some engine-driven generators do not perform well when
under-loaded.
Wind chargers should only
be implemented if there is a sufficient amount of wind. It can be beneficial to
a PV system in areas where it is very windy in winter, when sunlight is at
its least. Similarly to a generator, they can also be used to charge batteries
or directly run certain loads (in water pumping).
